Mackay Dinghy Sailors are Back on the Water Mackay Dinghy Sailors hit the water last weekend eager to make up for the weekends lost due to strong winds. Competition was fierce, particularly amongst the junior sailors racing in the Sabot class dinghies. All skippers sailed aggressively, but within the rules and with good sportsmanship, to obtain an advantage at the start line. Jack Turnbull sailing his new boat ‘Need for Speed’ led the fleet after the first windward beat in the first long course race, with the remainder of the fleet rounding the mark just seconds later. The race developed into a series of match races with Jarrod Evans on ‘Nut on the Tiller’ taking the lead and the race in the final 100 metres from ‘Need for Speed’. Kayla Evans sailing ‘Wahoo’ crossed the line just before Dane Bulder in ‘Robin Hood 2’ for third, followed closely by Ben Osborne in ‘Madness’, Cody Steindl in ‘Admiral T’, and John Hatfield in ‘Coming Through’. Race two and three were short course sprint races and Jack Turnbull crossed the line first in each race to take out the day’s racing. Siblings Jarrod ‘Nut on the Tiller’ and Kayla Evans ‘Wahoo’ took second and third for the day. Mackay junior sailors are attending a weekend of training next week in Airlie Beach with their North Queensland teammates in preparation for the annual North V South Queensland Sabot Regatta to be held in Yeppoon in June. Observers at this weekend’s racing in Mackay say that South Queensland are in for a surprise from the new talent coming through Mackay Yacht Club junior sailors.
