Light Conditions Test Mackay Fleet in Long Inshore Race Sunday was Mackay Yacht Club’s first Long Inshore race for the season with 12 boats competing… a great attendance!
It was a light south easterly breeze from the start line, and out and around Slade Rock, which gave the advantage to the nimble sports boat Guided Missile, who slowly extended their lead throughout the day.
The long leg up to Hay Point saw the Spider 28 Trapdoor hot on the heals of the front runners, keeping them looking over their shoulders all afternoon. The persistent left hand shift allowed most boats to fly spinnakers from Round Top Island all the way up, with the lead boats enjoying the ride so much they almost missed the top mark!
For the return run between Round Top and Flat Top Islands the breeze stayed consistent, creating a drag race between the multihulls with Trinket holding off Nemesis and Slick Willey. The Magnum 8.5 Foxtrot made the best of the conditions closing the gap and gaining on Upmarket, which is an excellent feat for the new crew.
With the breeze fading in the afternoon, the boys on Tip E put in a courageous effort but the weather got the better of them.
